Student Name, 000-00-0000, has requested that you be provided copies of his Academic Transcript and course description which attests to his completing the Combined Arms and Services Staff School (CAS3), U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (USACGSC), Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Official copies are enclosed.

 

CAS3 is one of three schools comprising the USACGSC. The College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools as a master’s degree granting institution. The CAS3 course is a resident six-week course which consists of 227.5 instructor contact hours with associated homework and labs. The course is designed for and attended by Army captains. The course includes 51 instructor contact hours in the area of Human Resources Development, focusing principally on problem solving and communications skills.

 

Problem solving instruction and exercises total 25 instructor contact hours. A total of 25.75 instructor contact hours is spent on communication skills. These lessons enable officers to analyze, develop, and effectively communicate all facets of the decision-making process essential to the role of the Army staff officer. These lessons include:

Using a problem solving technique to determine the best solution.
Using a decision matrix as a tool to determine a solution to a problem.
Describing and using the scoping methodology.
Presenting information, decision, and mission briefings.   
Composing an informal and formal memorandum, a decision paper, and a staff study.
Assessing self and peers.
Explaining the leadership framework presented in FM 22-100, Army Leadership.
Summarizing professional strengths and weaknesses and forming an improvement plan using assessment tools.
Explaining Army values and the ethical decision-making process, developing a solution to a moral problem.
Developing a coordinated staff plan of action
Conducting mission analysis and course of action development
Evaluating friendly courses of action

Demonstrated proficiency at the "B" level is the minimum standard for each component for the student to pass the course. Successful completion results in the award of three (3) graduate credit hours in Human Resources Development.
