The first International Military Students (IMS's) to receive the IMS Graduate Badge graduated in the December 1964 class. Prior to that, international graduates had worn a miniature device of the Leavenworth Lamp. However, this miniature was designed to be worn on civilian clothing, not on a military uniform. The IMS Graduate Badge is a silver device, two and one-eighth inches in diameter. The Leavenworth Lamp is imprinted in the center of the badge surrounded by the words "USA Command and General Staff College." Extending from the badge are 12 white and 12 dark leaf-shaped curves which signify the 12 months of day and night study that the average IMS spends in earning his diploma from the College.
TRADOC policy for the award of badges presented to IMS's is in recognition of CONUS training; therefore, IMS's who complete the CGSC Correspondence Course are not authorized the IMS Graduate Badge. IMS's who complete the CGSC Correspondence Course are issued the CGSC Diploma.
