JANE'S

ACCESSING JANE'S FROM FORT LEAVENWORTH

From the CARL homepage (http://cgsc.leavenworth.army.mil/carl/index.asp) click on the Find Articles tab or go to http://cgsc.leavenworth.army.mil/carl/databases/db_data.asp.

* You can skip all of these steps by going to http://www2.janes.com/client/ca/ from the Fort Leavenworth IP range. If you're not within Fort Leavenworth's IP range, you will be asked for a pin umber. This is the 14 digit number on your CARL Library Card.  It can also be acquired at the CARL reference desk or through the Combined Army Research Library Tab in Blackboard.

USING JANE'S

Once logged in to JANE'S, you'll see lots of buttons. The most commonly used buttons are "Search" and "Image Search". You'll also see several Jane's products on the left side of the screen that you can click on. By clicking on one of them, you'll open that product in a new window.

Click on "Sentinel Library" to open "Jane's Sentinel Country Risk Assessments". You'll notice an interactive map in the image below. You can select a region from the map or the list on the left side of the screen. Once you select a region, you can click on the country you want, and you'll view the country report for that country.

This is the 14 digit number on your CARL Library Card.  It can also be acquired at the CARL reference desk or through the Combined Army Research Library Tab in Blackboard.

USING MILITARY PERISCOPE

Once logged in to Military Periscope, you'll find a search box with a dropdown menu located near the top of the page.

Image of the Military Periscope Search Box.

This is a simple way to quickly search through all of Periscope's holdings or to narrow your search to parts of their collections. By selecting "Military Periscope" from the dropdown menu, you will search all of Military Periscope's databases. This can produce fairly unorganized results.  If you're looking for a particular weapon system, just type in the name of the weapon system. and choose "Weapons Only Database" from the dropdown menu. If you're looking for a particular country, select the "Nations Only Database" from the dropdown menu.

You can also browse through the collections by clicking on any of the categories on the left side of the page.

Military Periscope is a good source for public domain (not under copyright) images of weapons systems.

DTIC'S PUBLIC STINET DATABASE

ACCESSING PUBLIC STINET

The STINET database is available at the following url http://www.dtic.mil/dtic/search/tr/str/guided-tr.html
It is a public database, accessible from any computer with an internet connection. You can also find a link to it on CARL's Military Databases page at http://cgsc.leavenworth.army.mil/carl/databases/db_mil.asp

USING PUBLIC STINET

The Guided Search provides you with a number of fields that you can select from dropdown menus and provides text boxes to type in search terms. It also allows you to limit your search to full text documents.

Other options on the Guided Search page allow you to limit your results to a specific date or date range and to sort your results by a variety of fields. When you're ready to search, click on the "Submit Query" button at the bottom of the page or press the "enter" key on your keyboard.

STINET Search Tips
When searching, use the word "AND" to limit your results. Use the word "OR" to expand your results.

Source Codes
You can use source codes to limit your results to items produced by a particular agency. To do this, just enter the source code number into the search box that says "Source Code". For example, to find only documents whose originator is the School of Advanced Military Studies, type the SAMS source code -- 416090 -- into the source code box.

Here is a list of the most useful source codes for CGSC students. Remember that you can add multiple source codes into the source code box by separating them with a comma -- 416090, 037260, 403565

SOURCE CODES VALUABLE TO CGSC STUDENTS
Army CGSC 037260
Army Combined Arms Center 409551

Truncation
In Public STINET, use the * to truncate words. The * will find any any combination of letters after the root of the word.

  • For example: comput* will retrieve records with the following words:
    compute
    computer
    computers
    computing
    computes

    • Remember it will also retrieve words you might not want like:
      computation
      computations
