Anyone is welcome to use the CARL collections in-house. Some restrictions apply to checking material out of the library. To obtain a library card and check-out materials, a person must be a member of the military stationed at Fort Leavenworth, a family member or a Fort Leavenworth civilian employee. Persons under the age of 18 need an adult sponsor or parent with them to obtain check-out privileges. A DOD ID card must be shown at the time of registration. Anyone who is not a member of the Fort Leavenworth community can request permission to check out material. This request must be written and should be addressed to the library director. Approval is based on the applicability of research projects to subject matter specialties of the academic collection.  If you are a distance education student, please check on our Distance Education FAQs.

The digits of the theses or monographs are available in CARL's Digital library

CARL participates in interlibrary loan, but due to budget restraints the library can only borrow material for SAMS students, MMAS candidates, USACGSC faculty, staff and students, CAC & DAC personnel and, if funds are available, for students in cooperative graduate degree programs and dependents of Armed Services Personnel. The CARL Paperback Exchange is located in the lobby on the 1st floor of the Library.  The Paperback Exchange is designed to help you share your gently used, mass market paperback books.

Both fiction and non-fiction paperback books are acceptable.  However, please do not leave textbooks.  Please use Reason, Respect, and Responsibility when choosing which books to add to the Paperback Exchange Collection.

You may take any book(s) that interest you without replacing them.  You are not required to return books to the Exchange after you have read them, unless, of course, you hope that others will read them and enjoy them as much as you did!

Everyone is welcomed to use the Exchange.  The CGSC faculty, staff, and students as well as community members may take or leave books.

To keep in accordance with AR 735--17, Accounting for Library Materials, failure to respond to recall notices or overdue notices within the time limits specified and/or failure to pay for materials lost by the borrower may result in suspension of library privileges to include borrowing of further materials, use of databases and other services. Library privileges are restored after recalled or overdue items are returned or payment is made for lost items.
