  Question

What is Comprehensive Soldier Fitness?

Answer

Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is a $50 million Army program designed to build resilience in Soldiers, Family members and Army Civilians by developing five dimensions of strength: physical, emotional, social, spiritual and Family.

  Question

What constitutes Comprehensive Soldier Fitness?

Answer

A number of key program elements define CSF, including a Global Assessment Tool which is a survey-based screening instrument, used throughout a Soldier’s life-cycle. This tool will measure a Soldier’s fitness on each of the program dimensions. Outcome measures from this survey instrument will be used to create an individualized training program using a Soldier Fitness Tracker. The Soldier Fitness Tracker is a web-based system providing feedback and assessment while linking existing programs with identified needs. Policies will be established to ensure enrollment and completion. Soldiers will also have routine training to promote the five dimensions of strength. This training will take place before, during and after deployments, as well as through their career life-cycle (TRADOC Schools / Centers). CSF will also train subject matter experts (Master Resilience Trainers) to support brigade level units in both the operating and generating forces.

  Question

Who will be affected by Comprehensive Soldier Fitness?

Answer

Comprehensive Soldier Fitness will be standardized across the Army. Initially, Active Army, Guard and Reserve will see full implementation. In the future, Family members and Army Civilians will have the opportunity to benefit from the program as well.

  Question

What is the definition for “Resilience”?

Answer

Resilience can be defined as having the ability to grow and thrive in the face of challenges and bounce back from adversity.

  Question

What are the intended results of the program?

Answer

The CSF vision foresees an Army of balanced, healthy, self-confident Soldiers, Family members and Army civilians whose resilience and total fitness enables them to thrive in an era of high-operational tempo and persistent conflict. The desired outcomes are improved Soldier performance and readiness, increased confidence to lead, courage to stand up for one’s beliefs and compassion to help others. CSF is about maximizing one’s potential.

  Question

Will the Global Assessment Tool allow a commander or a medical professional to make a diagnosis?

Answer

The Global Assessment Tool (GAT) is not designed to make a diagnosis. Rather it is primarily used to determine an individual’s baseline, and to link that individual to education and training to help increase the his/her strength.

  Question

Who will be able to see the individual’s answers to the Global Assessment Tool?

Answer

No one. The Chain of Command will be able to monitor completion of the GAT and see the unit’s aggregate score from the Global Assessment Tool, but no one will have access to an individual’s answers.

  Question

Is Comprehensive Soldier Fitness expected to help prevent, or decrease, suicides?

Answer

Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is designed to provide assessment, education, and training which will give people better coping skills to deal with potential traumatic events and build resilience. It is too early to tell if this will positively affect (decrease) the Army suicide numbers.  Suicides are not the sole reason Comprehensive Soldier Fitness is implemented.

  Question

What is Battlemind?

Answer

Battlemind Training is the U.S. Army’s integrated mental health training program.
All Battlemind training is evidence-based and as such, is the only U.S. military behavioral health training program that has scientific research showing it to be effective in reducing behavioral health symptoms in service members.

  Question

What is Master Resilience Trainer?

Answer

Master Resilience Training teaches leaders to instill resilience in subordinates. Routine training will develop the dimensions of strength during the career life-cycle through the Army training domains – institutional, operational, and self-development. The civilian course, already developed and validated for civilian educators, is being re-worked in coordination with Army staff to make the course more relevant for those in uniform. This resilience training is based on the proven results of positive psychology in numerous environments over many years.

  Question

What is the Soldier Fitness Tracker?

Answer

The Soldier Fitness Tracker, a web-based software application, is being developed to track Soldier performance, which will link results from the GAT to training, intervention services and/or treatment programs that are tailored to the individual.
